Our team started working together in 2014, on a premise: the last major roadblock to a clean energy future is not cheaper solar panels, wind turbines, or electric vehicles — it’s getting huge amounts of intermittent renewable energy onto the grid, with load flexibility and energy storage. So in 2016 we founded Axiom Exergy and built the Refrigeration Battery: hardware that stored energy in a grocery store’s refrigeration system itself. It worked. But after years alongside store facilities teams, we kept seeing a bigger problem. Refrigeration racks fail silently. Leaks run for weeks before anyone notices. Energy is wasted around the clock, and nobody has time to watch the data that would catch all of it.

The insight that changed the company: the data was already there. Every store controller was quietly logging temperatures, pressures, and compressor behavior. Nobody was listening to it.

So in July 2020 we rebuilt the company as Axiom Cloud: AI that runs on the controllers our customers already own, no new hardware. The first apps carried the thread. Virtual Battery turned a supermarket’s frozen inventory into thermal energy storage, no lithium-ion batteries required; Virtual Technician put the same data to work on the maintenance, energy, and refrigerant problems that plague the industry; Facilities Analyzer (early 2021) added enterprise visibility across whole portfolios. Those apps grew into today’s modules: early leak detection, predictive maintenance, energy optimization, and HVAC. In 2021 our software predictively identified its first refrigerant leak at a grocery store, before anyone else knew it existed. It has been doing that, at growing scale, ever since. And we run as a managed service, not a tool: every anomaly the AI raises is reviewed by a US-based refrigeration specialist before it reaches a customer.

The name never changed its meaning. Exergy is the portion of energy available to do useful work; it’s still in our DNA. We exist to stop useful work from being wasted in the world’s cooling systems.
