Our Vision
Make the world’s cooling systems sustainable.
Cooling today is neither economically, environmentally, nor operationally sustainable.
Up to 90% of a cooling system’s 20-year lifecycle costs are driven by energy and maintenance costs, which are rising fast
Cooling already consumes 25-30% of electricity worldwide and is responsible for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and cooling consumption is expected to increase 33-fold by 2100
The refrigeration industry is projected to face a shortfall of 180,000 qualified technicians by 2025
We believe that these huge problems can be solved using the proven playbook of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and automation.
Our Mission
Use software and automation to transform how the world’s cooling systems are powered, operated, and maintained, in order to generate significant climate and financial impact.
The cooling industry is on a collision course with shortages of qualified technicians, tightening refrigerant regulations, rising energy costs, inadequate power grids, and warming climates worldwide. We cannot remain on this path -- we need to change the strategy.
We provide value to our customers and make cooling systems more sustainable in the following ways:
- By predicting equipment issues and making cooling systems more efficient, we lower maintenance costs and reduce the energy required to achieve the same amount of cooling.
By adding power flexibility and energy storage to cooling systems, we generate revenue for our customers and enable higher penetrations of intermittent renewables (solar, wind, etc.) onto the grid.
By identifying and curtailing refrigerant leaks early, we help reduce the amount of high-GWP refrigerants released into the atmosphere.
Our Guiding Principles
Our Story
The Axiom team started working together in 2014 on the premise that the last major roadblock to a clean energy future is not cheaper solar panels, wind turbines, or electric vehicles - it's enabling extremely high penetration of intermittent renewable energy onto our electricity grid with load flexibility and energy storage.
To that end, we developed our first product - the Refrigeration Battery® (RB) - with the goal of providing the lowest-cost form of energy storage1. While operating the first RBs for our retail grocery customers, we realized that the intelligent software we developed to operate the RB could be applied more broadly to unlock the thermal flexibility inherent in cooling systems (without additional hardware). So, we turned the cloud-based AI software into a standalone IoT Platform and released our first “app,” Virtual BatteryTM.
The Virtual Battery app was designed to transform a supermarket’s frozen inventory (food) into an intelligent thermal energy storage asset, without expensive lithium-ion batteries. As soon as we began operating Virtual Battery, we realized we could use much of the same data we were gathering and analyzing to provide more value and make a larger impact. So, we developed our second app, Virtual TechnicianTM, to tackle the maintenance, energy efficiency, and refrigerant management issues that plague the refrigeration industry, and to supercharge technicians with predictive maintenance and continuous commissioning.
In early 2021, we released our third app, Facilities AnalyzerTM, to provide enterprise visibility and analytics for refrigeration across multiple sites at an entry-level price point.
Today, Axiom Cloud’s team of refrigeration experts, data scientists, energy nerds, and software developers solves retail grocery’s biggest energy and maintenance challenges by layering intelligence onto their existing refrigeration systems. Experience with commercial refrigeration systems is at our core, and we plan to leverage this experience across multiple industry categories to make the world’s cooling systems more sustainable.
1Note: The Refrigeration Battery thermal energy storage product line was discontinued in early 2020 when the team began focusing exclusively on our software-based apps for refrigeration.
